HOME SWEET HOME

This 1923 split-level Craftsman house in the up and coming Bellavista neighborhood has all you need. A sweet porch is a great welcome to this bright and cheerful home. Inside, the open floor plan gracefully unites the living and dining rooms. Classic hardwood floors, lots of natural light and vintage details make it especially inviting. The eat-in kitchen has Carrara marble-like quartz counters and a corner window that overlooks the back yard and its beautiful fig tree. The kitchen has a back door to the yard, which is nicely landscaped with succulents, lavender and rosemary, and framed by a willow and peach tree.

The downstairs bedroom overlooks the garden and is bright and comfortable. On the upper level is another bedroom, with large windows and a peek-a-boo view. The downstairs bathroom is convenient to both bedrooms.

A detached garage offers lots of storage and off-street parking. This cute house is a cozy nook in a good location. The Bellavista neighborhood, or "Brooklyn Basin," is one of Oakland's best kept secrets - close to everything, quiet at night and genuinely a mixture of all lifestyles. It is also home to several excellent neighborhood restaurants: Michelin recommended Champa Garden (Thai/Laotian), The Grocery Cafe (Burmese), Kainbigan (Philipino), Portal Restaurant and some of Oakland's best taco trucks. A trendy new coffee shop is slated to move in on 13th Avenue near 28th Street. Sunny all the time, it is a quick trip to Lake Merritt, the farmers' market and the excellent shopping at Lakeshore, and is near to the Glenview neighborhood and Park Street, with the delights of Rumbo al Sur, Bellanico and Park Burger.

Lots of light and a lovely location make a winning combination in this charming home.

Neighborhood

BELLA VISTA

The Bella Vista neighborhood is one of Oakland's best kept secrets - close to everything, quiet at night and genuinely a mixture of all lifestyles. A few blocks away in neighboring Clinton are several excellent neighborhood restaurants: Michelin recommended Champa Garden (Thai/Laotian), The Grocery Cafe (Burmese), and Kainbigan (Philipino). Portal Restaurant and some of Oakland's best taco trucks are also nearby. Sunny all the time, it is a quick trip to Lake Merritt, the farmers' market and the excellent shopping at Lakeshore, and is near to the Glenview neighborhood, with the delights of Rumbo al Sur, Bellanico and Park Burger.

The neighborhood has a rich history. Several mansions were built in the area, including Arbor Villa, the estate of Francis M. “Borax” Smith. The mansion stood between East 28th Street and East 22nd Street until the Great Depression when it was demolished and the property sold off in parcels to build more modest homes. The line of tall palms down 9th Avenue which ran along the eastern border of the property, is all that remains today of the fantastic estate.

Nearby in Clinton, the Ellen Kenna House, an 8,000+ square foot Victorian masterpiece designed by Augustus Laver, still stands on East 21st Street near 12th Avenue. Across East 21st Street and behind a row of more recent homes, stands Cedar Croft, once the home of John J. Valentine, a gun slinging stage coach driver who rose to become president of Wells Fargo Bank. It is rumored that Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and Black Bart were among the guests at Cedar Croft.
